Right now I am contemplating what to put in my 55 gallon. I am having a hard time making my mind up. I do have my heart set on cichlids but I do not want anything that will out-grow the tank. I am planning on doing a 3D background with sand as a substrate. What do you guys think? If you were setting up a 55 gallon right now, what would you put together? How many fish of each would you stock it with?

Do some eartheatters! I personally like the Gymnogeophagus species or smaller Geophagus such as "Orange" or "Red" Heads

festivums and keyholes are good throw in a school of cory cats and maybe a pictus cat ,also an angel fish or 2 may work.I had a tank in the past just like this and it worked very well also very peacful.

Jack dempsey

angelfish would work best IMO.

with a 3D background you will be taking out some space in the tank. average of 2-3 inches of width, so you're limiting yourself to the smaller types of cichlids. with this setup you can perhaps put in a jack dempsey but he may have a hard time turning around when hes fully grown. the angelfish will also allow you to have more than one, say a school of 6. plus they are peacefull enough to make a community tank.

would geophagus, gymnogeophagus, angelfish, festivums, keyholes, cory cats, and a pictus cat all work together? would they all be good tankmates? i would probably be overstocking but what would you think would be the best combination of those fish together? how many of each fish so I do not overcrowd the tank? thanks for the ideas by the way.
