Rebuilding 265 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
at least if you are going through this much hassle you could have a glass place cut one of the side pains of glass and do a 84L x 30w x 24t footprint and add 3.5sq ft of room to the beast. I have a 265 and sit looking at this thing wishing those were the dims all of the time

I like the height of the tank I had a 110 tall that was 30 inches and just loved the way that fish designate territory in different strata of the tank.

Ok, reconsidering rebuilding this one more time. But I'd do it with a new stand. I wanted to inquire about doing a steel stand. What size angle iron would I want to avoid the need for a center support? What gauge?

to add to the questions above, making the entire take stand out of angle is that a good idea? or would it benefit to make it out of square tubing? also when making the stand would it be stronger to butt weld the joints like a "T" or miter the corners?

Box tubing IMO and butt joints in the corners. Basically both for the same reason. Both provide more surface area for the welds.

I would also build the jig for reassembling the tank out of steel as well. Steel would provide much tighter tolerances and the pieces will certainly be more straight than dimensional lumber.

how is the leak fixing going?

I have a leaky 265 also - small leak in middle of the back wall where the side meets the bottom.

I'm going to cut the silicon off the inside of the tank but not take the panes apart (keeping any silicon between the panes in place). Then I'll get 12mm glass cut to fit along the wall (so 83"xsay 2" by 12mm) and silicon it to the bottom and to the sides - hopefully making a new seal between the bottom plate and the sides - figured this will give an extra right along half inch of hold along the back wall. Because the tank is empty, I'll do this right along the perimeter of the tank. Hopefully will be water tight and stronger than before. Interestingly, the side joins already have a half by 1" brace which runs up and down the corners doing the very same thing.

Much easier than taking the entire tank apart.
