Finally getting closer to a finished product. 520 Gallon setup.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So, I got the leaks fixed and changed the impeller to the barracuda! I then had the problem of too much water siphoning back into the sump in case of a power failure. I changed the outlet pipes and it helped in breaking the siphon and now when the pump shuts off the siphon breaks before it overflows. I now have the problem of the water sitting to high in the tank. It's touching underneath the glass braces on the tank. I even opened the overflows more to see if it would lower the water but it's not working.

Anybody have any ideas why the water would be sitting high in the tank?

Gorgeus tank and sump!

Who did build your sump if you allow me to ask?

Thank you.
Thanks, just working out the bugs now! I designed the sump and the guy that built my tank built the sump. He is an aquarium builder in Calgary.

In regards to your leaky threaded connections, this product would have solved your problems: http://www.rectorseal.com/product-data/rectorseal-no-5/dsno5.htm

Reeflo actually recommends using this type of paste versus teflon tape. I had a small drop that would form at the outlet to my Hammerhead when I used teflon. I later tried the rectorseal product and it solved the problem- no more leak. It's probably too late, but just an FYI for next time.

In regards to the water level being too high, you would need to cut your overflow teeth a little lower in order to lower the water level in the display tank. Another option is to lower the GPH you have running through them.

I had the same problem as you...my overflow teeth could not handle the flow from my Hammerhead. I had to valve it back a little, otherwise my overflow teeth could not handle the flow and my display would begin to overflow.

I had read that trying to tune two overflow boxes using the Herbie Overflow would be difficult. I'm curious if you've been able to make it work. Do you have a full siphon in both overflow boxes?

What size are your drains?

I have 2-2" drains on each outside box but I only use one on each side for the drain as the other is used for an emergency overflow and has a pipe in it rising closer to the top of the box. I can't lower the teeth on the drain as they are as low as they go. It was the builder that didn't cut the glass opening down far enough.I changed the impeller on the pump to a barracuda and it helped ,then I cut the flow coming into the tank and it has lowered the water about 1". Seems to be working better. I am still playing with the flow in the boxes and into the tank. The only thing I can't restrict is the flow into the pump.

Perhaps the weir the water flows over isn't wide enough, and/or the comb is restricting the flow too much? I've had that problem on my old 1400L, actually hat to turn the pump down a little and replace the overflow comb with coarse mesh as the water level was too high over the weir.

I love big glass tanks and yours a real beauty! Did you go with Concept Aquatics to build your tank? I've heard nothing but good things about them from the Canadian reefers and was thinking of using them for my future build.

Concept came to help build the shell and the rest of the bracing and overflow boxes where done by the original builder. I would recommend concept as I dropped by their shop to pickup up some Vortech powerheads and they are always building tanks. I would say they have lots of experience in the tank building department. This was my 2nd tank built right in my house as they are too big to fit down the stairs.
