ive heard that red tails get to kno the owner "like oscars do" and they will interact with the owner, and eat out of his/her hand. is this true, and if it is does it only work with aquariums or is it possible in a pond? im talking about the south american red tail, not the asian.

They have been described by many as the perfect, ultimate water puppy. So yeah they would fit the bill probably better than anythign else.

Aquarium will work, sure, just make sure the aquarium is at least 10'x5'x4'. Something like that would only cost about what, 20 grand?

erm yeah, a pond will be much cheaper to utilize.

They can outgrow a 240g, starting from 3" size, in a year

mine is 8-9 inches and likes to be pet

and hand fed

i was hoping i wouldnt have to keep it in a tank. im thinking of geting one about 2-3" and putting it in my 75 gal untill its about 9 inches, then it'll go into my pond, the pond stays about 77-79 degrees, is this ok?im not sure the gal. cappacity but its 15ft long , 10 ft wide and 4 1/2 ft at its deepest point, its shallowest is 2ft, and theres a few bluegill and a red ear slider in it, the bg will prolly turn into food tho, im not sure about the turtle tho, is it ok?

RTCs eat turtles; its happened to various keepers. They can digest the shell tho, so no big deal... Your pond sounds great for it.

i found a link were their giving deals on rtc if u buy 4. i forget the price, but there like $25 each or like $60 for four. could i keep four, or i would i be pushing it if i bought two?

does your pond have serious heavy filtration? if not i think they might ammonia themselves to death

Wow......one year from a 3 incher into a huge brute that requires a pond? RTC's must have one hell of a metabolism.. How often are they fed for this kind of growth...and is it at all dictated by tank size. just curious, always willing to learn more from others.

Thanks,

Aztec Fred

their growth rate isn't unusual at all... for a fish that gets 4 feet long.

most of us aquarium keepers are just used to keeping fish that get much smaller in size than 4 feet, so the growth rate doesn't seem so immense to us.
