NYC - QUEENS
Hello

I thought I would share with this little project.

tanks dimensions are: 42 long 31 wide 20 high

glass used : bottom and long walls out of 5/8 the sides are 0.5 inch

black silicone GE type 1

lightning that will be used - 2x 150 HQI ( still debating on the bulb choice ... )

ps. everything was made by me and trying to keep this a low budget project ( glass pieces were found on Craigslist for free ! OMG were they huge before the cutting !!! )

It was / is my first build of tank that "big". Had some serious issues at first but hopefully it will hold water haha =)

Any comments and especially suggestions are welcomed =)

Take care all,

Voytek

I love the look of rimless aquariums. I really hope this works out for you.

The build looks great but are you sure about the quality of the glass and whether it's thick enough? 0.5" seems pretty thick but I'd still be nervous about bowing without having any bracing. I built a tank with similar dimensions (but only 18" tall) using 3/8"glass and the sides bowed a lot until I put in eurobracing. You also need to make sure your seams are perfect (clean, thick silicone with no bubbles) with this style of tank since they're going to be supporting a lot more pressure than a typical braced tank.

Related question: does anyone have a glass thickness calculator for rimless aquariums?

I still may add some kind of braces on top ... I would not want to silicone a strip or glass tru the middle though ... if anything I will cut 4 little triangles and silicone them on the top of the corners ...

Tank isn't very high I doubt that the glass that I used will be not enough ! Jesus it's 5/8 ! what should I use 1 inch ? ;)

Thanks and wish me good luck I'm far from done,

Is this gonna be planted or saltwater?

You could put two 4 inch pieces/strips across the top of the tank on the edges for some bracing.
