Howdy,

I just came across a souped up Eheim 2260 in my new Marine Depot catalogue. It's called Eheim 2262.

Interestingly enough, neither the German nor the North American Eheim websited feature it  . As compared to the 2260 /\/\onster, flow rate was almost doubled from 500 gph to 900 gph by featuring a more powerful pump. That might attract some customers who mainly focus on flow rate and thus, fancy the FX5 (925 gph). It also comes with two quick-release valves.

With identical flow rates, the differences between the 2262 and FX5 are limited to
  • usable filter volume (with 4.8 gal, the 2262 is 3-times bigger than the FX5)
  • price (2262 is about twice as expensive plus additional media)
When you do the math and fill the 2262 (or 2260 as their canisters are identical) half with EhFiMech and half with EhFiSubstratPro, you will have the surface area of 1600 gal bioballs in a wet/dry. I am excited about this find and thought I'd share it :)

What really bugs me is that my internet search has yielded results in aquarium forums dating back to May 2006. How in the world did I miss that for so long :nilly:

wouldn't you be better off with 2 2260s?

Good thought - depends on tank size, stocking, and cabinet space. But also remember that you would have to fill the second filter with media - at 4.8 gal, that means $$$.

IMO this filter is aimed at flow-rate enthusiasts who like the simplicity of a single-filter set-up with massive biocapacity. I for my part have never had more than one filter on a tank - I do not care for too many hoses around my aquariums.

Boy that is some fast flow. Odd concept about the flow rate enthusiasts. The new pro 3s are doing that with the 12 hours high flow for mech, and 12 of low flow for the bio. Strange...

the FX5 is crap anyway if someone gave me one i would put it straight on ebay

its just one big sponge filter in more ways than one it uses double the electric as a eheim pro3

why would you want so much flow on a 2260 anyway filtration is also down to amount of time that the water is in contact with the media

and as eheim make the best filters on the market im sure they resurched the 2260 for a long time before they released it

I don't know what you guys are smokin' but Eheim isn't run by the Eheim family anymore. You might be hard pressed to find the designers that did the old stuff. You should have been able to see the changes coming when they came out with a HOB filter. Then the Ecco.

MFKers with the large fish, I'd think would eventually realize that the bigger waste products will require a stronger flow to pick it up.

Eheim's not after American dollars anyway, they want the Asian market. They feel Americans are too cheap to buy the best and too stupid to find the best value. For example... Walmart and Petsmart.

I was hoping the last line was a typo ! that makes the FX5 more of the value proposition at under $300 dollars compared to $600 ?

I have no doubt that was in response to the FX5 -but they got to do something about the price...
