Im picking up a 125 gallon later this week. Im going to paint the back black, like i do with all my tanks. My question is does anyone paint the bottom of their tanks also? I want to got with a bare bottom tank but i don't like the looks of it with the clear glass.

I found myself in the same boat....wanting a bare bottom tank, had all the sides and back painted black, but I was gonna use black muslin fabric underneath the tank on the stand (had some laying around). Needless to say, after filling the tank I did not like the looks of it at all, so I covered the bottom with sand. Doing it again, I would have tried painting the bottom first. If I then filled it and did not like it, I then would have probably used granite tiles for the bottom (which I should have, especially since I have about 10 laying around :screwy:). But try painting it as opposed to putting it on top of something black was the point of my post.

Yeah ive tried fabric as well. Im going to try paint it as it cant hurt either way, but I think it will look better than the fabric because you wont have the half inch or so of space between it and the glass.

Someone put this in a substrate argument thread, and I'm actually doing this to a 20g later today. They used a sand-textured spray paint from home depot/lowes. It looked like a sandy bottom, but was on the bottom of the tank, and bare glass inside.

Ah yes, I remember reading that thread. Very good idea. If you have a link to that thread, awesome. If not, for the OP, it was a thread where someone used a sand textured paint and it looked just like sand when done. It was impressive how well it looked as a bare bottom tank. Looking at it fairly close you could not even tell, the only way you could tell was by the silicone seal showing. I highly suggest trying a textured paint like that, even a marbling paint.

I'd like to see a link to that thread as well. The sand-textured paint sounds like a great idea for my 40g.

one of my tanks i painted the back and bottom black even though i put sand in it just so when the fish dig it dose not show the glass.
my other tank i did the back bottom and sides black and left it bare. i like how easy it is to clean but i think it makes the tank look dark nothing to really pop.
the sand texture paint looked good it the thread i saw
