So first thing in the morning i had to make a rescue mission..someone tried to have a midnight snack and bite off gars tail..he's about 3"..

He has some difficulty swimming but otherwise it seems it doesnt bother him - swims around, taking bloodworms with pleasure..

Now i wonder if it will grow back or there is too much damage?
Pic is crappy but i think it is visible enough..

I really hope so, because he is missing that "spike" on tail that juveniles have.. dont know if it is hard tissue or just recoverable part of tail..

I have heard that at this size, if the "spike" gets broken, the fish will die - I'll be interested in updates.

-gar will be just fine, primary finnage will grow back with no problems. the tail filament will not grow back, usually once that is lost (through natural degeneration/damage/etc) it will not grow back. there is no size at which if the tail filament is broken, the gar will die.
best of luck with your fish!--
