Just wondering because I was considering breeding Synodontis in the Fall. Is it possible to breed any species of Synodontis without Haplochromis cichlids present in the tank? In the tank I have that I would be breeding them in the biggest African cichlids I could house with the cats would be Mbunas and I don't think they mouth breed to incubate the Syno eggs, couldn't fit any haps in the tank size. Unless of course someone could suggest a good host Haplochromis that would as adults be able to fit in a 37 gallon (30"L x 12"W x 24"H) with Synos for life.

I thought there was maybe a few small Tanganyikans that Synos can use as hosts but I may be mistaken.

Synodontis petricolas and s. multipumctatus can be bred in an aquarium without a host fish. Eggs need to be collected so the fish don't eat them.

How can they be coaxed into breeding without cichlids present?
