I though the Japanese ones were the endangered protected ones; and the Chinese ones were the ones running amok and hybridizing with them.

chinese ones are critically endangered in the wild too because they thrive in fast flowing , very clean , oxygenated streams and due to pollution and urbanization , this type of environment is becoming very rare here in china . The one sold are for sure from farms . They are also considered a delicacy and fetch very high price on the market , another factor contributed to their decline in the wild .
