The 40b in the stand was almost more trouble than it was worth lol. It'll be good in the end.

I had to order a new trim piece for the sump. It was $16 on order at the lfs. The top has some minor cracks which I will epoxy and reinforce with some extra plastic. but the bottom is totally destroyed. Actually falling apart im not going to take chances with the bottom. Leak tested It holds water @ 23 years old, and its sat in a wisconsin garage since 1999. It'll be 3/4 full of water with new trim and a reseal so the age doesnt concern me that much. My old man has tanks from the 80's in his fishroom w/ original silicone and cracked trim, like a boss. Anyway ..$4 in silicone and $16 for a trim piece isnt too bad for the sump. A DECENT 40b will run $100 new.

I've heard some horror stories about foam under tanks. While other guys swear by it. Obviously the stand is going to settle some over time (the floor should not much since my 75g was in the same spot) im just putting it in there for an extra margin of error. If there is a 1/16" deviation or something the foam will atleast pick up some of the slack. Its a high density material that does not compress much. The stand surface is nearly perfect so im not terribly concerned. the center brace is unsupported as well. Im going to do alot of testing on the system downstairs before I set it up on my living quarters. I doubt any issues will emerge in a 2 week time span but I'm gonna "feel it out" I guess. The stand my 20 year old 75g is on is a total piece of crap. its holding its Own. Its all a roll of the dice. The best we can do is take precautions and hope for the best.

Picked up my versatop today. Was going to do a canopy but im burned out on the diy stuff. Im sure I will down the road after I recover from this project. Tops w/ a wood canopy may be a good idea in the long run.

Surprised the build quality of the tank and top are leaps above my 20 year old stuff, glass and plastic are thicker. The tops fit absolutely perfectly. no play what so ever. Surprised there's an industry in america where the new stuff genuinely is better than the old stuff.

I ordered a 48" 6000k marineland doublebright LED fixture this morning. I was going to do diy lights but meh. Looking forward to see the shadows and shimmering. $100 on amazon.

Also purchased a 16 foot string of blue leds im going to make into moon lights, as the marineland fixture doesnt give the option of separate timers. Im optimistic that if I run the marineland fixture less time per day it'll last longer overall. Blue or white lights

Piecing togethet the 1/4" acrylic trickle tower.
uploadfromtaptalk1410456088685.jpg
Didnt like the sterlite/rubbermaid drawers. Just wanted a custom fitment.

1/4" acrylic is a pain to work with. Tried scoring and snapping it like I have with the paper thin stuff you get at home depot. No luck. Tried a cutting wheel -25,000rpm was a no go as was 11,000 rpm. So I youtubed a how to and the first video I see a guy using a damn circular saw on it. So I looked at my tools, out of the sawzall, circular saw, and jig saw I decided the jigsaw was the gentlest hammer for the job. The cuts arent pretty but itll work. Needless to say you wont see this at a Japanese aquarium expo with obnoxiously beautiful acrylic tanks lol.

Ive got a half dozen of these for media compartments. They are 2.5 qt. 6.5"x10.5" sturdy built food containers.
They passed my rigorous testing of their fluid dynamics. The tower is slightly larger than the stacking comparments so if one happens to clog it can bypass down to the sump.

uploadfromtaptalk1410456757760.jpg

I made a removable stand so I can slide it out to remove the tower if need be, as the tower sits very snug around the drains. Above the top of the 40b the towers front panel will be hinged with a latch. Enough space to remove the 2 mechanical media boxes easily. The top chamber is going to hold water as mentioned above.

A work in progress.

Waiting on the silicone to dry in the sump after my brutally ugly, yet functional reseal job.

Got crackin on the lights. Still waiting on the Marineland doublebright 48-60 fixture to come via ups.

So I decided to construct my diy moonlights. They live up to the down and dirty moniker. For sure

Picked these up at my friendly local bigbox store bent on global conquest. Onsale for the agreeable sum of 12 measly US greenbacks. 16ft long @ 6 watts, with a reasonable amount of LEDS. 1 about every 2 inches. Seem on par with the disappointing ebay strips ive wired up in the past.

Omg NO. you are not ziptying them to a pvc rain gutter are you?!

uploadfromtaptalk1410751497843.jpg
Yep.

uploadfromtaptalk1410751512907.jpg
Bought a 10foot run for $5 with 2 snap pn end caps totaling $4.

I cut 2 sections each 4foot. One section I butchered all to hell with zip ties and my drill, it fits snugly and conveniently inside a pristine unmolested section which is not only visually pleasing but also highly functional.

Mind you the tank is dry in this pic. Only time will tell how well this penetrates 2 feet of water. Its easy enough to switch out the rope lights for something more powerful inside the large housing.

Just needs a coat of krylon fusion satin black. Look to krylon for all of your pvc based projects.

Total price is about $21. It will sit behind my marineland fixture.

Got any updates?
I finished the trickle tower and im nearly ready to glue the plumbing. Just gotta do cosmetic stuff like my diy background and my aqua scape. Planning on using silicone and slate to make a permanent scape my cichlids cant ruin.

On my honeymoon right now. Just wanna go home and finish it before November lol.

Did a dry fit test run with the pvc. Everything works. Made a huge mess running the mag9.5 with out the plumbing glued. But hey a mans gotta test it out first.

uploadfromtaptalk1412741746732.jpg
Finished the tower. 6 filtration compartments. 1 access door above the sump. Drains have a redundant submerged overflow on top. I Used mechanical fasteners instead of solvents. (Made the whole process easier, its far more forgiving) I got some clear nylon "angle irons" and 1/4" acrylic. It doesn't have to be water proof just moderately splash proof. I couldn't score any nylon or plastic machine screws or rivets locally. I settled for 316 stainless machine screws. I've heard the whole no metal in aquariums argument. Its 316 stainless, I work with the stuff every day. Its surgical steel. Im sold on it. Plus I'll only have half a dozen fasteners submerged. sorry dont mean to rant.

The angle stock is actually nylon I'm pretty sure. I got it in bulk from an industrial supply place, its meant to be cut to fit and used to protect drywall corners in high traffic areas like in offices and stuff. Its moderately flexible but very strong. I've found similar at home depot but it was thinner and adhesive backed.

Its a neat material for tinkering around in sumps. Ive used it in the past with no ill effects

More updates.
uploadfromtaptalk1413009663872.jpg
Making serious headway with the plumbing. 1.5" for the mag 9.5 and a single 1" return for a future secondary pump to be determined.

uploadfromtaptalk1413009739555.jpg
Decided to forgo the spraybars for some simple jets. I'll have 3 of them. 2 powered off the mag 9 (about 250-300gph each side) ...
and the center I'm looking at an aqueon submersible pump model 3000 rated at 796gph about 350 gph at head. Ive got a gift card to the Lfs, I think aqueon is my only option.

uploadfromtaptalk1413009908913.jpg
Tried to minimize sharp bends. Apparently pvc conduit is aquarium safe according to what ive read. Hopefu this helps keep my flow where I want it.

Youre my hero jones, i never considered the notion of using the conduit. Does it glue like regular pvc or are u using silicone?
