You're right about that. Usually, you just cycle tbe tank, and don't change water until you're done. I think people change water while they're cycling to keep toxins low so the cycle isn't quite so hard on the fish. May add some time to tbe process, but it may be a little easier on the fish, too.

ammonia 0-.25 (wasn't .25 but wasn't 0) nitrite 0 nitrates 10

on average with a clean slate 6 to 8 weeks to fully cycle a tank up. happy Easter to you as well.
