I dont have any thing fancy, and dont expect to put money in for cleaning the pooh.
Since I have a powerhead all of the pooh pretty much piles up on one side of the tank. Lucky for me huh! I kept on trying to figure out a way to get the pooh cleaned up, and finally I found a little method.
I have a syphon (from Petco. The one with a hand pump) to clean the pooh of my tank. I start draining the water into my sump and where the water comes out (end of the syphon), I just put my NET at the end of it and let the net catch all the pooh as the water returns to the tank. I do this everyday and it only takes about... maybe 1-2min. I noticed before I was doing this, aside from my water changes (every 4 days) I spent a lot of time trying to chase after the pooh. By the way, I have a bare bottom 150gl.
Just thought I'd share how I keep my fish in pretty good health since they dont have to sleep next to the pooh for a few days anymore. Also posted this to see if I can get any other methods on how you fellow fish-heads clean the tanks.

Sorry, I didnt know where to post this, so I just posted under Idea :)

I use the gravel method. Pooh goes and breaks down in the gravel, I come in and syphon out the gravel about once a week. Done and easy.

Since I have a bare bottom, I dont like to see the little turds going in circles like a tornado :)
Plus I plan to get a Histrix for X-Mas :) :) So I have to come up with a little excellent water plan and just thought by giving more attention to the little dookies, I will have better water quality

If you don't plan on spending money to clean the "pooh", don't spend money on "fish".
No fish , no pooh, no money spent.
Never mind food, water for changes, meds. if needed, lights, filters, substrate, ........................
Hell, just fill up the sink and look at it 'til you get bored, then just pull the plug. :screwy::screwy:

Man SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
Y dont you read the post again and it clearly says that I change my water every 4 days. To tell you how much, its 40% one week and 50% the next week.
All I simply did was post a non-money method of taking more time to help the water conditions for the fishes health.
Sorry for not making this an "IDIOT PROOF THREAD"
If you cant read or comprehend, then dont enroll on a forum. Hell, just watch TV or something.
:feedback: either I posted wrong, or your the only one who responded with something brainless and negative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You made my day:) I knew my stupid ROCK was smarter than somebody:screwy:

I'm impressed.
Intelligence knows no bounds with you that's for sure. :D:D
Having said (typed) that, It seemed to me (based on the wording of the first post) that you are trying to keep fish without "spending money" to do it.
All hobbies take "money" to support.
My response was based on how I interpreted your OP. If I misread, or otherwise misunderstood your intended meaning of the text, I apologize.
I did read it and based my response on a "person that just wants to have fish", not really KEEP them.
Most "keepers" don't post questions relating to "not having anything fancy", and "not expecting to put money in for cleaning the pooh".
And since you "have a powerhead all of the pooh pretty much piles up on one side of the tank. Lucky for me huh!", You are obviously way ahead of most of us, so why post this question here to begin with?
Changing your water every 4 days is obviously not taking care of the "problem" that you don't want to spend money on, so why bring that up?
And finally, I guess you messed up on the "Sorry for not making this an "IDIOT PROOF THREAD" as well. After all, you did post it.
Even if you don't "spend money" on a gravel vac., 40-50% waterchanges every whenever still costs money (you pay for water or electricity to run a well pump).
Sorry if I offended you, but the "Man SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" is ridiculous also.
Given the fact that my fingers are doing the work here, I don't see how my mouth really has anything to do with it. :):)

Well I can go on forever, but I have things to do.
This was not done to ask Q's. I simply posted a way that I clean the bottom of my tank (in Re: pooh) and described how. Then as I typed this, I asked on how other people clean the pooh situation as to get more feed back on how others do so.
N-E-Ways this thread was meant for people who have the brain to understand what they read (to much for you). Hope you understand the fish that you have, Atleast!

with a bare bottom tank, a power head pointed at the bottom of the tank should keep the pooh and other stuff stired up enough to alow the filter to remove it. with a gravel bottom, i use black sand so i dont see it any way, but i siphon it out with a python during water changes.
