i just got off the phone with my LF and he told me that the type of gar he has is a hugetti gar....ne one know ne thing on this? i dunno if im spelling it correct either.
Ctenolucius hujeta, the Gar Characin. South America; northern Columbia and northwestern Venezuela. To twenty eight inches in length. Conds: dH to 22, temp. 22-25 C. Large tank with plenty of open swimming space and some planted cover, possibly floating plants to give shade. Predatory but, ok with larger fish. Carnivorous: feed live fish, worms etc - may prove difficult to wean onto 'dead' meaty foods.
We have kept hujeta gars for a number of years and have never needed to feed live food.Feed smaller gars bloodworms, chopped mussel, prawn and cockle, large ones same and whole whitebait, they will usually feed as food is put in striking in mid water and will always feed from bottom.Max size in aquarium 10".Try this site for info on these and other related species http://fish.mongabay.com/ctenoluciidae.htm
