I know bio-balls are more commonly used, but how well does bio-bale work in comparison?

Im in the market for a wet/dry sump for my 60gal and came across this. Any info, opinions or suggestions, please let me know.

THANKS!!

Never tried...but waaaayyyy more expensive than the bio-balls i get at Big Al's around my place. The key is surface, so both will do the same job in my opinion. I would not spend more for this stuff.

I've used both. They both work well. Bio-bale has more surface area than bio balls, so technically it should be able to handle more bioload.

If you want an effective wet/dry media without spending alot of $$$'s, try nylon pot scrubbers. I get them from Big Lots, 6 pack for $.79.

Check out this link about filter media:

Great link Bizdaddy!! Thanks for that!!!

Looks like the pot scrubbers has a ton of surface area. Hmm... something to look into.

Yeah i like the idea of nylon pot scrubbers too! Alot of surface area for beneficial bacteria and it's the CHEAP! :grinyes: I will stuff some in my sump!

This whole nylon thing got me thinking of either a diy sump or an empty wet/dry system to try and save money. Are there places out there that sell sumps without media for a cheaper cost?

I say if you want to go for cheap, build your own. That is what I am doing on the 300g I will be building this summer in my basement. More work, but less $$$$...less $$$$ means more fish :)

Makes me want to restack my wet/dry with some different stuff.
