behind my iMac.... Southampton UK.
Hey guys was just wondering if it would be possible to mix 2 SAL's? ideally thinking of putting a albino in with my guy. if it is possible what would be the max size difference you guys would risk? have they ever been bred in a tank? is there any chance of them pairing and going nutts at tankmates?

I'm considering trying it with my two once they are nearer in size.

shouldn't be a problem? mine was in a tank w feeders, never harmed any of them

From experience, I'd say you can't mix them for long. I bred SALs back in the 70s and the male wouldn't tolerate the female in a 8 ft diameter pool until his nest was ready. After spawning, he savaged the female with bites until she left the nesting area (was removed from the pool).

Ok thanks guys!

Oddball: is there any clear way to sex sal's? and do you think either two male's or females might coexist any better? what are the breeding requirements of the sal?

:screwy: mine is the same, proper pacifist! would not so much as harm a fly unless it was dead.....

Perhaps I'll rethink that plan, thanks guys!

Can't discern sexes until the males go into breeding dress and display branchial filaments along their pectoral fins.

BTW, SALs (Lepidosiren paradoxa) are most aggressive towards conspecifics. They seem to ignore tankmates. Mine were fine in community setups with one SAL per tank.

I was going to say, just because it's fine with other fish, doesn't mean they like each other. Both mine live in full community tanks without bothering the other fish.

Ok no worrys one Sal to a tank for me then.... but a albino still seems tempting and there is room in another tank......
