Hello all, I'm not new to this site or plecs for that matter but I'm new to this section. I was having a chat with Mrs Y the other night and thought the idea of a plec only tank was an interesting idea. The problem I have is that due to the already having a small living room which has 2 tanks already we can only fit in a 30-35g tank for this project.

The plan is to have the tank with an internal filter(an external could also be added as well in the future) with plenty of wood and hiding places for around 6 or 7 different small Ls, if they get too big for the tank they could always be housed in another one of the other tanks.

Has anyone had any experience in doing this sort of thing, any feedback would be appreciated?

Thanks for reading

Y

I have done it a few times, they are normaly very entertaining. The best bit about these tanks is they look empty, until you feed them lol. Plus if you watch the tank late at night rather then through the day you will get the most out of it.

Try and group the same type of plecs together by Diet and current size. If you go for Panaque of any size you will need the external!!! My 3ft comm tank is lightly stocked but has L264 x 2, L47 and LDA33 all the same size. The mango is struggling to keep his weight up (out competed for food) so the sultans are going in my big tank for a diet.

Lots of wood, caves and water changes...enjoy!!

Thanks for the quick reply, I was going to try really small different Ls and watch them grow by really small I mean small. Hey I spend most of my life changing water anyway, one more tank won't hurt;)

L numbers can be quite expensive, have you looked into any species? L134's are beautiful little fish. Clown plecos are good too but they can get a little teratorial some times.
there was an article on L numbers in this months PFK if you like reading lol

I hadn't gone into specific numbers yet, but I'll check the article out. Thanks for the response

I had a 33 long that had all plecos. Heavily filtered with a river setup, power heads on PVC pipe from one end to the other with sponge filters.

I had a pair of Farlowellas, 4 clown plecs, a flash plec, a snowball plec. Great tank at night with a red light.

I have never kept this, but my LFS has a few like this for show. They have Pyramids of pvc stuck to the back of the tank that extend out to about 4" from the front. On one to make it look more natural they built an aquascape on top (gravel, driftwood, plants and other stuff). This way the plecos can hide, but you can still see them.

I keep a panaque maccus... mean little bugger. I wouldn't go with them for this type of tank.

Sounds nice, any pictures of it?

Thanks for the comment:)

I had one. I had a blue phantom, green phantom, royal, scarlet, and gold nugget.

IMO it was a boring tank during the day, no movement at all and i never had a small light to look at them at night since they are only active during the dark.

Eventually sold all of them except the scarlet and made it a pbass tank. :)
