there's like a oily sheen or film on the top of the water. it's a freshwater tank. could it possibly from putting in too much stress coat? any ideas? suggestions? thank you.

Stress coat will leave a film from the aloe. You can also get a film from not-fully-cured driftwood, feeding FD krill/plankton, beefheart, liver, oily feeder fish, etc. If you don't have surface skimming for filtration there's an 'old school' way to remove this film. Take several squares of paper towels, drop them flat on the surface of the water, and immediately pick them out. This will blot (wick) the oily film to the paper.

oddball thanks u learn something every day

thanks. i'm defenately gonna try the paper towel thing.

Oddball: That's a good method, never tried that. I used to suck it off the surface with my python, I'd hold it at an angle to the surface and remove it that way.

Your way is probably much easier. :)

I use my python to remove it during water changes. Just hold the gravel tube upside down under the water surface and it works like an over flow. It works great and gets all the film:)

wow that works to

thanks everyone. i already tried the paper towel thing. it didn't work, however i probably didn't do it right. i'm gonna try with my gravel vac and create that overflow. thank you!!!
