Has anyone had any problems with their aquariums effected by earthquakes?

Just wondering... I live in the area, though no so close that I'm in the epicenter, but did feel it. Other than the house itself, I'd have to say that my biggest concern was my tanks...

I wondered this myself. The only difference between the quakes here in the midwest and those on the west coast is, the crust here is more of a dead pan (extremely hard) where the soil in the western states is a sandy soil.

I know the quakes we've had here recently are fairly weak, but it still concerns me as this has been our third one since Friday.

Let me put it in an analogy, put a pile of wet sand on a plate and set a glass of water on it and shake it gently. Some water may spill, but overall "damage" would be minimum. Now, put the same glass of water on a bare plate and shake it with the same gentle motion. You'll probably end up with a broken glass.

Its disconcerting to say the least.

I'm more worried about the stand failing than the tank...

On my big tank, its held together with around 30 threaded rods into the concrete walls...

I worry about that, too. One of my tanks is about 2 feet larger than my bed. If an earthquake were to happen, The tank would fall on top of me o_O. Fortunately, I'm nowhere near a techtonic plate.

ive had this thought for a long time since i live in the San Francisco area....well lets just say California where lots of quakes happen a couple times a whole single year like some small ones below 3.0 but the main concern of mines is those above 5.0...so every since i had this thought in my head and danger it could cause to my fish tanks and the fishes inside would be catastropic...so what i did was just bought a 2 pieces of 3" flat ropings but very hard like leather or harder...adding with 2 strapings on the stand to hold it in place and 2 to hold the tank its self but one end of the strapings is screwed in flattened bolt which stays hold on the the front top left and right corners of the tank....but to make its simple of what i have said is that i used straped braces

i use shelf brackets to mount my stand to the wall (making sure i hit studs)... ive only lived out here for a lil over 2 years.... i still check the usgs site all the time and stress myself out...

i really need to go get myself some renters insurance to cover the damage these tanks could do... the floor is tile.. but still

we got Mt Rainer and its a active volcano lol now that will suck when she blows
