I got two very attractive ivory mystery snails for one of my tanks. They both lived happily in my tank for about 3 days before one met an untimely, horrible, seemingly painful death. It crawled over the intake of my ac 110, half of the body got sucked into the slits, while the other half remained in the shell, the snail couldn't move at all. I found it stuck there, shredded. I have no idea how long it had been there, but it was so stuck I had to pry it off forcefully. I was so disgusted, but my angelfish were really happy when that snail hit the substrate.

Poor thing, I hope it didn't suffer. Also, is there anything (cheap) I can do to protect my other snail, yet not decrease the efficiency of the filter?

I think every animal has the innate ability to try and prevent it's own demise, but pain, that probably depends on it's nervous system.

I think I'll take that as a "no", ewurm. I know that's not exactly what you said, but it helps with my peace of mind. Thanks.

im sorry, but just found this post funny on MFK
I know. I'm so girly. I really don't belong here lulz. But you're stuck with me.:p

Actually, it's a proven fact most inverts can feel pain.
Not sure on snails though.

To prevent this from happening again, slide a sponge prefilter over your intake. I have found that the sponges designed for AC20 or AC30 filters work really well. Just cut a slice through the middle and slide it over. Penguin also makes a black prefilter, but the AC sponges are cheaper.
