real gar family besides the Lepisosteus family, or is the Lepisosteus family the only real gar family? because i want a real gar (not a hujeta/rocketfish or needlenose fish) but the Lepisosteus family is illegal in my state. :(

all gar are illegal in your state. it's not only lepisosteus that are illegal...it's lepisosteids that are illegal in you're state, which includes the atractosteus and lepisosteus genuses.

there are 2 families of true gar. lepisosteids and atractosteids(spelled right?). but they are all true gar. which are illegal in arizona.
i explained it the best i could but still not completely sure if its correct. poly, solomon, or jordan will probably explain it better. all true gar are illegal in arizona despite the scientific name.

so lepisosteids include both atractosteus and lepisosteus?

not really...

i have another question, now knowing that both families of "true" gar are illegal in arizona, one of my lfs recently had what looked to me like shortnose gar, since i now know for sure that they are illegal, i now believe that someone went to another state where lepisosteids are not illegal, and snuck the fish into AZ, is this common for people to do or not?

even though they are illegal in several states, they seem to turn up quite often. they are however still illegal.
