Hey guys, I live in MI and ive been trying realy hard to find gar fry and i cant find them anywhere. Does anyone here have ideas of where i could look. Any help would mean alot.

try looking on plants that are in the water. that is what i have heard.

:iagree: if that doesent work try a fine mesh net.

that would probably work the best.

You might want try in a marina or near a dock in the weeds. Somewhere with lots of cover nearby.

Even Grass
At this late in the season it is not going to be very easy to find them without some very hard work. Key first step is to know the lakes in your area, the habitat and then find the fish in spawning areas at the right time. In your locality Longnose are the rule...No other species are there.. These are rather open water fish in lakes and the larger rivers. They typically spawn on the edges of gravel piles and along the sides of vegetated areas. Marl flats with the associated Stonewort (musk grass), najas grass, canada eleoda and intermixed wood debris are a favorite hang out and spawning location for these fish. Look for patchy shore and submerged vegetation with expansive open but shallow areas.

Young longnosed gar at this time will be found in the area the fish spawned. Right now a typical Osseus will be around 3 to 4 inches and will have staked out a home range around 150 square feet. They could be found at the surface close to shore or lower hugging alongside different portions of structure in deeper water. Rarely will they be found over four feet deep. Once you find one others will be around. This is a very difficult stage in the fishes life and they will not make themselves obvious to you or any other predators. To find them will require a seine and trying multiple areas that fit the above habitat profile.

In about another month the fish will disperse again to other areas. When they do this they are scattered to the wind and finding them is merely a matter of luck. They can be found anywhere and everywhere at this point. (Especially on inland lakes)

This should narrow your search a bit (By habitat and behavior) but sorry to say there is no 100% perfect way to find these fish at this stage without close observation of the population in a given area at a given time throughout the season.

Good luck...

Thank you poly!!! That realy gave me ideas of where i can look. Im gonna go serching again today so Ill let you guys know if i catch anything.
