I got a new 8" ornate about a week ago and i haven't seen him eat yet. I have tried herring, sardines, squid (all of which my 3" albino love) as well as blood worms, pellets, algae waffers. Any suggestions?

first off relax hunger strikes are not uncommon with bichirs and can last for weeks at a time.My ornates personal record is 4 weeks.A healthy fish will not starve itself to death.
Are you feeding at night just after the tank lights go out?-Anne

:iagree:

But don't give up. Here are some things I feed that you may want to try too.

Pet store bought:
Hiakri Sinking carnivore pellets, Hikar Marine-A sinking pellets, Plankton sinking pellets,
Algae tablets, Tetramin variety pellets, Omega One Shrimps pellets, HBH Cichlid Attack pellets
Frozen: Bloodworms, Beefheart, Ocean one marine, Brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, Squid, Silverside, Krill
Raw: Shrimp,Chicken, Hamburger(rarely) Anchovies,
Live: Ghost shrimp, earthworms, Guppies, Mollies & their fry
Store bought: Frozen shrimp, Tuna( once in awhile)

Hi, my ornate is currently surviving on a pellets-only diet. I really wanna add some fresh meat to it eg fish or seafood, but I notice the water surface always gets very oily when raw food is added. The other time I tried tiny pieces of pork and liver. She ate them, but the water became oily. Any way to counter this? Thanks ppl =)

First DO NOT FEED PORK ITS FATTY
The freezer at your local fish store is a smorgasboard of foods which should include
silversides or lancefish
mysis shrimp
brine shrimp
krill
bloodworms
tubifex worms
squid
beefheart
Simply thaw and feed

Your local market can be a great source of foods check the seafood section of the freezer
You can use just about any foods you find there including
mussels
shrimp
most fish filets (avoid salmon i think its to oily)

Available at the butcher counter or they should be able to order it for you
beefheart
and yes chicken gizzards
to prepare the above cut it into strips and remove any fat you can find
fish do not digest mammialian fat well
