I was looking at the prices for canister filters and power filters and I noticed that the price for canister filters were 3 or 4 times the price of power filters when they pump the same gph and are rated for the same size tanks. What is it that makes canister filters worth 3 or 4 times the cost of a power filter?

the ability to have more biological filtration. Thats the thing that sticks out the most for me.
You can also maintain them easily and they look cleaner (all you see is a couple of hoses).
You have a lot more options as to how you want it to filter too.

With a canister, you can hide it under the stand and have your aquarium pretty close to the wall. You can't really do that with a hang-on.

I've always thought that canisters are expensive "pain in the ass to work on" filters that are not much better than hang on's or power filters.
I would have to guess that they are more expensive to manufacture and are of a better quality & design but by and large, canisters do the same thing a power filter does. They may be able to hold more media and perhaps move more GPH than a similar power filter.
Also, the manufacture may not make as much money on "replacment cartridges" with canisters when compaired to power filters so to counter that they may charge more money for the filter. (that's a guess though)

Canister filters have MUCH MORE surface area for mechanical and biological filtration, and to boot do not require as much maintainence.
Think about the size difference between a canister and HOB or internal filter.

more filtration capacity they have alot more slots for media and the also have a higher flow rate than most power filters
