Hello everyone I need your help. I can purchase a custom 220 gallon aquarium with a very nice sump built on the side for $250. The problem is the aquarium is showing stress cracks on the bottom seam. This aquarium is acrylic. Is this a good deal? Is the aquarium hard to fix? Any help is appreciated.

thanks,
Monty

Could you spost some pics of the cracks.

I am no expert on acrylic repair, but you might be able to stick/bond a piece of acryilic in the corner on that seam to reinforce it.

I didn't take any pics, but it looks like where the seems comes together was a very slight crack. Maybe not a crack, but glazing as they call it. I'm not sure if its worth the price, but it is a very high end setup. It has an extremely nice overflow built in. It was a custom built tank by some guy who owned a bunch of wendys restaurants. I know its probably a very old tank though. The guy who bought it off of him had like 20k worth of saltwater fish/coral in it in his restaurant. he said he wanted to replace it, because kids would go over too it and mess with it etc (he was worried about them scratching the acrylic). He replaced it with a huge glass tank that was special ordered. I'm no expert, but looking at glasscages.com I'm guessing that this tank will cost around $2000 if it is new. I know he said he was getting a small leak from the bottom that he patched. The one on the front showed up after he had it in the garage on an unlevel surface. He said he thinks it would be a good iquana tank. There is noway I would trust it in my house, but garage might be ok. I'm not sure if it is worth the $250 though.

Sounds a little sketchy to me. I think I would have to pass on this one. It seems as though this tank had a very hard life. Definitely a buy at your own risk situation.

thats the good part about acrylic, is easily repaired. i would buy in both cases. but i dont mind doin a little work for a deal.

Stress cracks are not a good thing. Especially if you want to keep monsters in the tank. The integrity might be compromised. Way too iffy.

I got my 300 gallon for $200. It has a slight leak on the right seam. The guy selling it to me didn't tell me about it.........or he didnt know. He probably knew.
Anywhooo, I'm in the process of resealing it.

You are probably a heck of alot more handy than me. I really want the tank, but I half heartedly decided to hold off for a bit. I was looking at getting a new one, but good lord they are hella expensive. I keep going back and forth on this tank. I stop by and look at it about every other day. He has it behind his restaurant on a carport, so I usually drive over and think more on it..lol I called glasscages.com and they said if it were there tank they would throw it away. They said its not worth the risk. I would fully agree if it were going in my house, but it would be in my garage.

Just get it. Even if it does leak, you could probably get your money back out of it by cutting it apart as selling the acrylic.

You think about this too much longer and I am going to come down there and get it.

There you go. Buy it and use the acrylic as windows for a DIY monster tank. Could you buy a new piece and just replace damaged piece?
