I have a Oxydoras niger, who is almost 30" long. It has outgrown our 300 gallon tank, so I have been trying to find a new home for it. I contacted the zoo a couple of weeks ago. Finally somebody contacted me last night and said that he was very interested in taking the catfish. They have an amazon river exhibit that he would do great in. YAY! My catfish is going to go to a great home, and we can visit it whenever we want.

Ok, so I need some advice on how to get him out of the tank and transport him. We were thinking of getting a large plastic trash can, poking a bunch of holes in the bottom and using that as a "net" because I am worried about using a net on him. Any advice?

I'd just grab him by hand, 30" is a big fish to try to net. Get a large rubbermaid tub to transport him.

The can idea could work, if you decide to go that route get one that'll fit inside the tank, lay it on the bottom on it's side and try to gently coax him into it.

I'd lower the water level all the down. Get some heavy plastic and slide it under him. Just like they do with the Orca's but on a much smaller scale. Do not use cloth cause it may puncture with it's spines.

I'll post some pics - it is going to be a very wet day I imagine :)

We won't be taking him to the zoo until next Sunday.

Frosty - how on earth do you pick up a 30" catfish by hand??

If your not comfortable grabbing him by hand... take a pillow case and put it in the tank on the bottom... lower the water lever till you feel comefortable to guide the fish over the pillowcase and pull it up over both sides, then pull him out... if you can guide it INTO the pillow case that will work as well

very cool this happened to a friend and his electric eel now featured at the new england aquarium

I had this problem a good few years ago, when i grew one out from a couple of inches to 24"+ fish that had never even seen a net since it was put in the tank. Anyhow i had a large 10" diameter piece of pipe it used to hide in, well couldn't of been easier, got it in one end, blocked off the other end, tipped it on its end to drain water off and lift, nothing got wet or damaged including me, or the fish. Just make sure it can fit in it.:D

I have used the same "technice" with striped raphaels, works fine.
