hey guys n gals, im looking to pick up a trio of 2" emporers and im delighted! Its taken a fair bit of finding too...

So as title i have a few lil questions:

How quick is average growth rate? What should i expect?

Personallity what do i expect? Are they comparable to tems?

I know rift lake cichlids have different dietry requirements, does this apply to emporers if so what?

Any tankmates that are either a deffinate no or yes?

Should they be able hit 3' in a tank?

Thanks people!

Oddball is the only one I've heard about housing them properly.

I'm sooo jealous as well as happy for you at the same time. Nice. Good luck. We're waiting for pics. What size tank you have in mind for these guys ?

thanks guys, il pm oddball... Be good 2 hear from any1 who has experiance as i know a few others have just cant remember who... Looks like they will be here late next week, so pics to follow...

Tankwise, ill start em in the 36x18x12, then 72x24x36 then 100x36x48, but there final home will prob be 10-12'x4'x4-6' depending how big a ring i can afford to buy the otherhalf at same time...

Stockwise, its guna be
Rtg, cichla, emporers...

from my understanding, they are much more intolerant of tankmates than Cichla are. Much more aggressive fish, with very little that will be compatible with them

Call me old fashioned, but I don't like mixing them too much. Especially since you're getting more than 1 ...you might end up with a pair and then everything else in that tank is toast.

Tank size ...go for the biggest tank from the very begining, they have an incredible metabolism resulting in an astonishing growth rate. You need a group of at least 5-6 from the very begining to "hope" you'll end up with a pair.

Tank mates ...large Frontosas, period. The only guys that could stand up to my pair were the Frontosas. Anything moving fast around the tank, God forbid them being a little shiny, will be very fast dealt with and they will swiftly become food.

Requirements? ...large, open spaces, aragonite sand as substrate, lots of filtration and water movement (I had 3xFX5s on my 400gal and 4xAQ110 powerheads) ...for food, mine ate anything from pellets to feeders. Never tried shrimp, I prefered pellets.

hmmm, think be best to growout may work best, as don't actually want them to obtain 3'... 2.5-3 is fine just not 3'+....

cichla shud do fine then? they can more than hold there own.... and much more robust than a front....
and rtg is 18" so dont see them poing a risk fo a while....

1t check, 2nd dont do subsrate, 3rd check, 4th check... we see if they eat mp, dont see why not...

I don't like mixing Lakes, or fish too much... but Cichla could work definitely. Lake Tanganyika biotope I would only use Frontosas for tankmates.

I disagree on Cichla as tankmates, due to the much higher level of aggression of the emperors.
