New tank for my Jack Dempseys!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice looking male - reminds me of mine somewhat. I was not able to get my male and female to get along putting them together at that size for some reason. Good luck and let us know how they do.

Yeah, he definitely chases her around quite a bit; it's clear the current tank they're in is his. I'm going to put her in the new tank first, and introduce him in a 3-5 days later. Maybe that will help. I think their age also has something to do with it as they're not really mature, yet.

UPDATE

Still waiting on her to bulk up. She's grown a bit, maybe 50%, but he's more than doubled in size. I'm thinking of isolating her in a 20g for a week and feeding live foods, but at the same time, she hasn't died, yet, and they seems to get along after feeding, so perhaps time is on my side.

Males are bigger and have pointed fins.

I find this very commonly untrue…

I have a brood of Grow outs and many of the females are larger than their sibling males from the same brood…

In the same brood many of the dominant females have pointier fins than the subdominant males from the same brood…

Also, since these fish are all from the same brood we cannot blame this on genetics… simply put, size nor pointy fins are a reliable way to sex Dempseys…

Instead, look at the lower gill plate of the Dempsey… females will generally have Blue refractive splotches… males will not… Keep in mind it is exceptionally difficult an rarely reliable to sex Dempseys prior to them becoming sexually mature… this is also true for almost all Cichlids…
