Okay so heres 1 pic before the OPERATION when his gills were just curling and curling. It got so bad I thought it would be dangerous either with or without the surgery. So I looked into it and it seemed pretty simple. My cousin was the one who did the cutting. We recorded the operation but somehow it didn't record the the camcorder. I won't ever trust an 8 year old with doing the video:(. But anyways I got plenty of pictures which really isn't that nice to look at. But for whoever who might go through this I hope it might help you or maybe you'll be able to critique what we did.

The last two pictures are ones I took today. My aro has been eating and seems healthy since the cutting. I just hope his gill plate grows over his gills once again. Until then I will probably be changing his water and siphoning just to make sure hes in a clean place.

For the surgery I used clove oil as a sedative. It took some amount of drops and I was careful not to have him OD on it because it could've been deadly. He was cut on a dining room table and returned to the tank to awake in my cousins arms. I have a youtube video of him swimming excitingly. He eats like a monster everyday.

good job

Those surgery pics look real bad. But its good to see that its healing. Is gill curl deadly, or is it one of those things where it just "looks ugly"?

It looks like you got a nice clean cut.

Did you have to cut much of the hard gill plate?

A lot of people make the mistake of waiting too long before they take the plunge into sedating the fish and doing surgery...it is a risky process but really isn't that difficult provided you follow the precautions.

It is very important to stop gill curl before it starts curling the hard plate, by doing this it makes the cutting process much easier and the gill will heal much nicer.

yeah I waited too long definitely. I was working on stopping the curling but should have cut the gill when they were not as far back. He cut a decent portion of the hard plate. not too much but enough to expose the gills the way they are.

Was that not the right thing to do? It looks as if its healing. I just need to work on keeping his spot clean and not going on any long trips for awhile.

I'll be real happy once the gills are covered again. Thanks for all the comments.

Okay so I was about to feed my jar today and just really noticed the gills getting back to normal. Theres a little exposed still but that should be gone in another month with how it has been growing now. Can't wait till I get started on my sump soon. And if your thinking of getting rid of gill curl I say go for it. My friend RTG has to do it too so I think its a real common problem. And I also noticed the jars gills turned inwards so I have to say it feels like a success now.

I uploaded the video on youtube.
