After struggling to get my Jack Dempseys to breed, i have pretty much figured it out and would to share my thoughts with others.
Temperature and water:
First i set my temperature at 80-82 degrees. I alway do weekly 50% waterchanges.
Conditioning Fish
Next you have to get your fish in shape to breed. To do this, feed them alot of food thats high in protein. I fed my JD's market shrimp usually once a day along with Hikari Gold cichlid pellets. After about 2-3 weeks my females all had huge bellies full of eggs! Once the females are full of eggs, they are going to have to do something with them! As long as there is a male in the tank they will lay the eggs!
Tanks and Setup
Next, i have noticed that if you put the fish in there own seperate tank they usually breed within a week. This has happened twice for me and I have also read that this has happened with a lot of others as well. If you have a female and male and put them into a smaller tank with just a pot they will have nothing else to do but focus on breeding. I took a male and female out of my 125gallon tank and put them into a 30 gallon and within a week they bred. When i first got my 125 gallon i took a male and a female and put them into the 125 by themselves and they bred within a week as well.
Aggressiveness
Another problem I ran into was that my male was way to aggressive towards my female. He had her up in the corner of the tank and she was getting very stressed out. To solve this problem, i put him in a tank by himself for a week and then after a week I added the female and instead of being mean, he was really happy to see her. After 6 days my pair has bred in the pot.
Any other questions, feel free to ask me!
