After struggling to get my Jack Dempseys to breed, i have pretty much figured it out and would to share my thoughts with others.

Temperature and water:

First i set my temperature at 80-82 degrees. I alway do weekly 50% waterchanges.

Conditioning Fish

Next you have to get your fish in shape to breed. To do this, feed them alot of food thats high in protein. I fed my JD's market shrimp usually once a day along with Hikari Gold cichlid pellets. After about 2-3 weeks my females all had huge bellies full of eggs! Once the females are full of eggs, they are going to have to do something with them! As long as there is a male in the tank they will lay the eggs!

Tanks and Setup

Next, i have noticed that if you put the fish in there own seperate tank they usually breed within a week. This has happened twice for me and I have also read that this has happened with a lot of others as well. If you have a female and male and put them into a smaller tank with just a pot they will have nothing else to do but focus on breeding. I took a male and female out of my 125gallon tank and put them into a 30 gallon and within a week they bred. When i first got my 125 gallon i took a male and a female and put them into the 125 by themselves and they bred within a week as well.

Aggressiveness

Another problem I ran into was that my male was way to aggressive towards my female. He had her up in the corner of the tank and she was getting very stressed out. To solve this problem, i put him in a tank by himself for a week and then after a week I added the female and instead of being mean, he was really happy to see her. After 6 days my pair has bred in the pot.

Any other questions, feel free to ask me!

A couple weeks ago I tried somthing simillar to what you suggested. I took my pair out of the 90 and put them into a 30, and nothing happend, except they lost all their color and were really stressed out, the water was good and the temp should have been right. The one thing I didn't do that I probably should have was that I didn't change the way, or what, I feed them, so maybe that's the key to my next attempt being successfull.
Thanks for the info.

Cool! my success has been using smaller JD's as dithers for the main pair and a 50% water change after 3-4 weeks.

well, my 3rd pair of jack's just layed eggs tonight! So thats been 3 pairs in a week! unfortuetly the first pair got their eggs stolen by a pleco and the second pair were not fertile. This pair looks to be fertile as the male is guarding the eggs as well. Pretty much the only thing you need to do is get your females really fat and full of eggs! thats the only thing i was doing wrong. Once they are full of eggs they pretty much have to breed! This female that laid today had a huge belly. The male was showing no interest at first and she kept just bugging the hell out of him and now tonight they breed.

nice write up :)

:(

I place a pair and in about 1-5 days have eggs and inside of 10 days I have fry. with Blue genes/Golds and regs. Just give it some patience they are not all the same :)

They were not breeding in the 90?

my female that just breed is a little about 3.5 inches. I read a post by a guy that said he had his JD's breeding at 2.5-3inch mark.

I am so glad I found this I have a pair of jacks in a 125 gal and they just swin around together since they are not the "Top fish" in the tank they just show a lil aggression towards the little guys in the tank so I added another male in and still nothing happened but instead of takin them out I was goin to just divide them so they can have their "Private time" that way I am not setting up another tank I keep you posted to let you know what happens. thanx for the advise I love this site!!
