Comment on Media responsibility in regards to our hobby

Thanks for pointing that out. I was gonna say that I just saw that same ray yesterday at the local fish store sold as the blue spotted marine stingray, so that couldn't be a new species. But now that you mentioned it, it is not the correct picture, it makes me wonder, just like rtf said "what can we trust the media"? They report snakeheads being a troublesome fish, and so everyone follows it. It is troublesome to someone irresponsible, but to many of us, it is not. Shoot, you got me going again rtf :) :lol2: I always get sidetrack maybe because I am too emotional about things I couldn't do anything about...:swear:

There was a thread posted by Marxxx about a new stingray found in asia.
this was the url that was posted :

and this is the picture of the ray in the article

To me, ridiculous how media would put a stock picture of a stingray that is not even close to the new ray that was supposedly found. We all know that this is not the first time it has happened.

What are your thoughts and comments on this?

they want it to seem cooler than the dull brown rays they got down there.

I think they dont have photos of the actual ray. And in the interest of making
their report look sassier, they would rather get a stock picture of another stingray.. never mind if its saltwater and caught in egpypt rather than asia.

:swear:

It was probably used as a generic referance, because the general public usually do not have a good mental image of what a 'Stingray' even looks like. .

You'd be surprised, most would think of a manta-ray before stingray.. Alot of people who aren't into fishkeeping are surprised to hear when I keep Stingrays, as they didn't even know FW ones exist nor were viable in captivity.. They only think seaworld.

Inaccuracy pisses me off.

youre right, they did use it as a generic reference. But to a casual reader, it might as well have been the real deal. Its just misleading to me.

And im not just talking about that article. What about the numerous other "piranha" reports found on the news and turns out it was just a Pacu . Or snakeheads attack people? Im just sharing Vinces rant about half assed things reported by the media and its just pisses me off a bit.
