KENYI R.I.P.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I lost all 4 of my Kenyi today :wall:

I was moving them into a their new 40 gallon tank.

The 45 gallon they were in had a slow leak so they have been in my 55 gallon with my Electric Yellows for over a week now so this 40 gallon could cycle.

Well I put them into my bucket so I could take them all into my living room to the 40 gallon.
(The same bucket I have been using for water changes since I got my first cichlids.)

After transplanting them into the 40 gallon I noticed right away that one of them was swimming funny. Within the next hour all four were dead.

The water parameters were so close to the 55 gallon you would swear its the same tank. so its my guess that it was something in the bucket.

I have asked my dad if he used the bucket for cleaning or something and all I get is "No!" from him.

He has a Bucket that is the same as the one I have been using only his was a different color.

The only thing I can think is that there was bleach or something in it even though it was dry and looked clean.

I had all of these guys from when they were one inch.
The one male had just changed to his male coloring.

Thank you too. I know the feeling I get sick just thinking about it I have had those babes for a little over 2 months now and it still makes me mad that they are gone over such a dumb move.

From now on I will transfer them 1 at a time in a drinking glass or something I know for sure is clean.

I would have to think about sending live fish. I live so far out in the sticks that I would be afraid shipping would kill it for sure.
Overnight is often 2-3 days around here.

I have 16 fry from my electric yellow that are 2 weeks old and about a half inch long. They were going to go to my LFS and my friends, but now they might be staying with me.

The temp was 27.6c
(what it has been at for over 5 days and still is now.) nearly the same as my 55 gallon that fluctuates from 27.4c at night to 28.2c in the day time.

(The 55 Gallon is in my bed room and I can't sleep in a warm room so the tank chills a little at night with the AC on in my room.)

I have a digital thermometer on both tanks and I watch the temp like a hawk because of past experiences with tropical fish and bad heaters so I know my temperature was good.

I do think my dad used my bucket for moping the floor and just won't fess up to it. I have only ever used that bucket for cleaning my tank and water changes.

They were in the bucket from around 15 to 30 min
(As long as it took me to catch them all out of the 55.)
I try not to freak them out so it takes a while to catch them sometimes with my 4" net.
Its a 3 gallon bucket.

The yellow males fins were tore up when I got them all out of the 40 gallon tank and they were not before I caught them but he was the only one that looked that bad.

The 40 gallon they went into was clean.
I rinsed and cleaned it thoroughly before I even brought it into my house.

im so sorry for your loss-its sad to lose fish you love. does the bucket have any odd smell to it? im thinking it was used for something other than fishkeeping. if i were you, just keep a bucket of your own (out of your dads reach lol) with your stuff in it.

they were really beautiful kenyi!

I gave the bucket to my dad today, and then bought another bucket.

Its is now on the shelf in my bedroom closet where my dad shouldn't be looking for a bucket.
I was keeping the old one above the washer and dryer, but apparently that is not safe.

I am quite sure he used it now because he waxed the floors last week when I was at work.
I think he needed another bucket so he just grabbed mine.

He wont admit it though because he knows I'm mad about losing $$$ for fish, the 80 mile trip to the LFS, and the almost 2 months of watching them grow big.

On a Brighter note one of my female Electric yellows is holding again so maybe all is not as bad as it was.:D

Still makes me sad though.
