I used a 1200 Maxijet powerhead connected to the out-take.
I made a 2 foot long canister out of 4" PVC. The canister lays flat (horizontal).

I have two 'media socks' created from scouring pads that are 9" tall.
I also have Three 2" Aquaclear coarse sponges cut to size.

I plan to fill it as follows:
=Intake-------[Sponge-Sock-Sponge-Sock-Sponge]--------PowerheadOuttake=
That should take up the 2 feet.

Question is, what do I fill the 'socks' with?
Would I fill one with ammo chips and carbon and the other with bio media, whats your opinions? What stacking order should i use these, keeping in mind the canister lays horizontal.

The filter is for a 30gal rubbermaid feeder tank holding 200-300 convicts, all less than 1cm (so far)

I can include pictures if they will help.

id put mech media then bio media

You have an identical thread in the DIY forum. A mod could of moved it if it was in the wrong place and cross posting is against the forum rules.

I would like to see a picture of this filter but aside from that, you just made yourself a quick and easy powerhead filter. I would fill it with lots of mechanical media (poly fill/filter floss) as well a some coarse material before that. Aside from that, fill it with biomedia if you need it and only carbon if you absolutely need it (I don't recommend it).

Ammo chips is a complete waste. They should only be used in emergencys (e.g cycling, mini-cycles, power outages, other ammonia spikes). Anyway, white diamond is superb to ammo chips.

If you need chemical, go with a resin (i.e Purigen, Chemi Pure, etc.)

My bad. I noticed it turned into a filtration question. and I can't delete my own threads?

My only experience with filters are the emperor400's i have. I figured i'd copy the setup but it doesn't seem like the way to go.

so
=intake-----[sponge-floss.in.sock-sponge-bio.in.sock-sponge]-----outake=
is the way to go?

I know nothing of the chemical you speak of.

Heres some pics.

The threaded end connects to the powerhead which you can see is already placed in the tank. I added the plywood bowing support today as well. You can also see the female guarding her easter eggs, lol.
The socks are just 2 scotch-brite scouring pads sewn with a bottom. the sponge is 2" thick.

I got bored so here is a photoshop representation.

This is how you're saying I should filter this 30gal feeder?

due to lack of advice I think that's the route i'm going to go.
Although I hear a lot of people saying elsewhere to just use biomedia...

who knows, i might do a half carbon half polyfill sock then a biomedia sock.
Just gonna go to the LFS and see what they have lying around.

I filled the bottom sock with poly-fill.
I filled the top sock with 5 bags of aquaclear110 biomedia.
Sponges in between each layer.
(Just as my illustration shows.)

I'll definatley let you all know how she runs!

Much respect to rezin and scratchanut. I had an idea for messin with my powerhead one day and luckily your threads were on the first two pages, without that i probably wouldn't have tried. my fish thank you.
