Feeder Fish

I have set up this thread in order to list the MFKs way of feeding different types of fish. This is not a recommended diet thread, but instead it is for everyone to post some of the foods that have worked and the foods that have not been very good.

Please use this below format (COPY/PASTE) in order to make later searches easier. Feel free to write what experience you had using the different types.

Fish:

GOOD Foods:

BAD Foods:

Experiences:

Fish: Red Devil (Midas)

GOOD Foods:
Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets, Cucumber, Raw Steak strips

BAD Foods: Generic Flakes

Experiences: My Red Devil has been growing steadily on Hikari pellets to about 10cm, and now I have started giving him cucumber and raw steak strips. He absolutely loves the meat. I have noticed what comes out the other end is now darker than when on pellets.

Fish: payara, baracuda's, hujeta's, gar, needle fish, anything with teeth, all predators

GOOD Foods: live fish (thats why they have teeth)

BAD Foods: pellets, flakes, any processed foods bought at store

Experiences: Big toothy Predators have evolved into what they are today for one reason to catch and eat live prey items. If you like the look of the fish respect why they have that look. And feed live.

Fish: Smallmouth Bass (Fry)

GOOD Foods:
Red worms, mosquito larvae, tiny crustaceans and crushed turtle pellets

BAD Foods: Flake fish food and duck food

Experiences: My fry love eating the good foods, and they have been steadily growing now that I got them on mosquito larvae and crushed pellets. I started them on red worms and tiny crustaceans found in pond scum; they liked both but seem to prefer the other two foods. They completely ignored the flake fish food, and, while they enjoyed the duck food, the food broke down and made the water pretty gross.

Fish: Barramundi

GOOD Foods:
Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets

BAD Foods: Generic Flakes

Experiences: I am new at keeping Australian Native fish and at the moment my Barramundi is crazy about pellets. I would like to use different types of more natural food and hope some of our "Barra" keepers can post their knowledge on the topic.

Fish: Barramundi

GOOD Foods: Sinking protein pellets, Feeder fish (mollies, swordtails, etc),live freshwater shrimp

BAD Foods: garden worms.

Experiences: My experience is that feeding protein pellets, fish and shrimp to the Barras gives them a healthy diet, my Barras are nice and evenly built. If you don't like feeding live fish, a diet of live shrimp and pellets would do fine. I've noticed my Barras won't take worms or dead fish.

Fish: Oscars

GOOD Foods: earthworms, defrosted shrimp, and flake or feeders

BAD Foods: cichlid gold... it makes a mess in my tank.

Experiences: all the good foods kept my O's in good condition. main diet is defrosted shrimp. dont like feeding my O's cichlid gold because it makes my tank water dirty, but will feed em that on occasians. hand fed sometimes, dont like to because they get excited and splash water in my face. oh and the cichlid gold keeps my O's color and pattern brighter than ever.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fish: TT Eel

GOOD Foods: defrosted shrimp, live shrimp, feeders and earthworms

BAD Foods: anything dry lol

Experiences: iono my tt eel is a picky eater, never ate pellets or dried shrimp. usually i hand feed mine, since my eel is a bit slow.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fish: Senegal Bichir and Four Line Cats

GOOD Foods: earth worms, defrosted shrimp, cichlid gold, frozen krill

BAD Foods: flake food

Experiences: my sen is hand fed, the cats will eat anything that touches the bottom of the tank. the two types of fish dont take any interest in flake food. they do go crazy for earthworms and black worms. cichlid gold keeps thier color vibrant and pattern visual.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fish: Freshwater Angles. and Bala Sharks

GOOD Foods: flake food and occasianal pieces of shrimp. the balas will take earth worms, flake food, cichlid gold, and krill

BAD Foods: anything that cant fit in thier mouth.

Experiences: My angels live on constant diet of flake food. my balas are on a varied diet, they'll eat anything that comes into the tank during feeding time
