  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So here are the cliff notes....

The research concludes that instead of a single widespread species called Hoplias lacerdae, there are 5 similar species, that are regarded as different species: Hoplias australis (new species), Hoplias brasiliensis, Hoplias curupira (new species), Hoplias intermedius and Hopias lacerdae (the true one !)

The black hoplias wolf is a new species too. Which is now to be called Hoplias curupira !!!

There you have it...You heard it here first :)

Hoplias intermedius is actually a very old name that was ressurecteed with this paper. It was forgotten in the old literature, and the species in Rio São Francisco was wrongly regarded as Hoplias lacerdae. But examination of the original specimens used by Gunther to describe the species in the 1860´s, deposited nowadays in the Brititsh Museum in London, sets the stage for ressurecting this species. This sp gets a good size as well. Ive owned several of the Hoplias intermedius before. Here is a pic

Hoplias Australis is a latin name regarding the southern regions, and since the species occurs in the far south of the continent, these scientists thought the australis would be an adequate name. As to curupira aka hoplias black wolf sp. Osvaldo came up with that one name.
