since My ]V[onster 585 gallon glass tank is no longer running and waiting for it's new owner to come get it. I thought I would set my time machine to take a look at the rise and fall of this beast.
the original photos I got of this tank while It was in the last owners hands. I should also add that this tank was a Saltwater show tank at Aquarium Adventure in Columbus Ohio. And is an Old D.A.S. tank.
Some of the crapy filtration I got with the purchase of this tank. the only thing That got used was the Bio balls and mag 12s.
Move day. As you can see it takes a few people to get this thing into/out of my house. and for those of you who are going to ask.... we brought the tank in through a garage door. My house is on a hill.
After some basic cleaning of the salt that was on this tank I took some more pics....
For people who ask what do you consider a ]V[onster tank. this is it you have to be able to have a sleep over inside it comfortably. for referance I'm 6'1" and I have plenty of leg room.
I added some .5" styro insulation to the basement walls to try and keep as much heat in as possible. I did this by liquid nailing it to the wall.
After it was all up I painted it black. I thought if I didn't really have a "back" to this tank I would paint the walls instead. to this day I do not have any regrets about that.
A failed sump that was to be made out of two 55 gallon tanks. the largest that would fit under the stand. So I have to say srcew looks and just go
]V[onster with the next sump design.
the new sump was built out of a 100 gallon rubbermaid tub. It ran 2 1" inlets and 2 3/4" returns. Heated by 3- 400 watt heaters. And return water was pushed by 2 mag 12s. this worked great.
the one picture I have of the spraybars in action from the top. I couldn't take time out during the build of the bars to take pics so just the end result was captured.
tops were made out of .5" particle board and covered in about 5 coats of rustoilum (sp) applance enamel. The wood just soaked it up I went though a half of a gallon of the stuff to get the desired glossy look. And the viewing windows were 12"x12"x .220" acrylic.
the overflow was painted black with krylon fusion. But over time it was picked off by a big FF. and doesn't look that great anymore. but was a great idea at the time.
Filling... It took a little less then 2 hours to fill the tank. I have a cold only line that is about 15' away from the tank and it has alot of pressure. But took forever to get the heat up.
the first fish added...
Now the fish..... when the tank was just about ready I got a message from a pal on here saying I need to look at this thread....

And I did and I rushed my butt off to get my tank done and help the OP (kevin) move his fish and how could I turn down some of these monsters I mean they were great....

The Fall.........
the seam on the right started to leak on my a few months ago. I went to to feed and noticed alot of water on the floor but not enough that it looked like it was comming from the tank. After looking around I found it was in fact a leaking seam. And started to panic.
After the inital shock. I made a frantic phone call to Kevin. the guy I got most the big fish from Since He was back in the hobby and had become friends. Asking him if he would take my prized fish the niger cat back b/c he did not have a home if the tank had a complete failure. and Then I placed the other fish that would fit into my spare 125 in it. Leaving the niger and my big 27" RTCxTSN in the 585 untill I could find them new homes.
Bio media was taken out, Sump was tore down for later use on something else, and tops were taken off.
When All was said and done I had one fish left the FF. It seamed that locally I had no interest. and I did not have the ability to ship him. b/c there was interest in him away from ohio. I ended up trading him off.
Now as of today the tank is dry. It's ready to go. It has a new home about three housr from me. and a new owner that's excited to get it. It's a sad sight to dry it out and take it apart. Something that brought me great joy for such a little time is now a dry dust collector in my basement. It will be fixed by it's new owner and it will be showcased again here I hope. But as for myself and this amazing tank that pushed me so hard into this hobby our journey is over and we will part ways soon.
for everyone that sees this I hope you enjoy and I hope that if you have questions about the tank or the build, stock, or anything let me know. if it's off topic of this thread PM me I'm allways around. And thanks for looking.
