those are the right fishes. nice ones too!

The pre opercular bar only occurs on three species, proximus being one of them. The other two are winemilleri, and dicrozoster. I believe dicrozoster has a y-band when stressed. After looking at the different pics again I would say you have the correct ID but I'm not 100% sure.

I can't believe the Geos do ok in that tank with the synspillus. Every time i purchase synspillus they are mean to other tank mates. I've had one that i put in a tank with an equal size festae and had to remove it to save the festae. They were both about 6" in a 125.

Four species actually... + Geophagus brachybranchus

IMO the abdominal spot is not the right size or shape to be G. proximus, which have very large, square shaped spots

If you know what river they are from, that would narrow it down more

Looks like the right species. Like Abarilot mentioned, the fourth later bar on a dicrozoster is incomplete. But the midlateral spot on a proximus is usually larger tho...

P.S. nice GT too - hope they all get along.

Yea and they are a pair as well only get fisty when they breed

One a second though they might look more like winemilleri.
- Not a dicrozoster (wrong lateral bars)
- Probably not a proximus. Like Ed mentioned, the mid-lateral spot on proximus should be larger and square, and cover the upper lateral line.
- The laterla bars on a brachybranchus are not as distinct...but I'm not sure about this species.
- winemilleri has four wide lateral bars, and the mid-lateral spot is round, on the second bar, below the upper lateral line. Your fish may look more like this....

You guys, this drives me bonkers. His fish looks identical to mine which is supposedly an Altifrons. I'll just put a small pic here because it's his thread but please-tell me the difference, I want to know. I compared his side by side to mine and I just don't see the difference
PS Mine usually does have a dark spot mid-body 50% of the time.
