Move Over FX5.... the Fluval G is here....

So, the Fluval G is nearly here... i thought it would be a good idea to gather all the info about it in one place.

WHAT IS IT?

The next generation of external filters from Hagen and Fluval

WHATS GOOD ABOUT IT?

Well, Fluval have been working on this for several years and it appears to be a new design of canister filter that combines the media trays and electronic control of the eheim Pro 3 E series, with the multi-stage filtration and modern fittings that fluval are known for.

OK... I'M INTERESTED.... SHOW ME MORE

This new video shows more of the filter, but you won't get to see it in action until next week, after it has been unveiled on the 6th in the UK. Keep an eye on the Practical Fishkeeping website in the UK, as they have announced they will be getting one of the first ones in the UK - they also posted a video preview of the U series internal before anyone else.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

the filter consists of media trays arranged around a bespoke pleated filter cartridge in the middle.... because these cartridges exert a known back pressure as they clog, fluval can monitor the pressure in the filter and the electronics rely on this to figure out when it needs cleaning and optimise the pump performance.

If you modify these cartridges, you will lose the electronic benefits.

Trial units have performed spectacularly and the new fittings are very, very well thought out... a huge step up from the old-fashioned fittings you get from eheim, and the fittings used be the FX5 and 05 series.

GIMME GIMME GIMME!

The filter will be onsale in october worldwide and prices wil not exceed those of comparable eheim filters. 2 models are known so far - the G3 and G6, tank ratings not known. More info to follow.

Be warned, these will be the new gold standard in aquarium filters - you will need one on your tank.

That is all... over and out.

(^_^) I will update this thread as more info is revealed.

and suddenly the simplicity of the eheim classic seems more appealing. after the 12 month warranty imagine how much its gonna set you back if it breaks with all that new tech thrown into it.
those pleated filters look like they will be an excuse by fluval to force us to buy their own brand replacements. the running costs look like they are gonna be substantial if those pleated filters need regular replacement because i bet they wont be cheap even after taking a loan just to buy the filter.

agreed! its really funny how brands* would make things look more complicated than it really is...and its extra funny that most..make that ALL stuff in this hobby can be DIY...think about it ;)

Personally, i want one, and if it turns out to be to much up-keep, then i have a 305 external and a U4 internal that work spectacularly. Ill just sell it if that situation arises.

That thing looks like a tank!! To bad though, it doesn't seem as if it'll be competition though to Eheim. Simplicity is the best way to go.

personally i'm really happy that it uses the FX5 motor... it's be super powerful....

i'm in the market for an external and really not sure what to get!!

I don't know. Sometimes simpler is better. Like I would choose a classic 2217 over a pro 2 any day. Classics are way more reliable. I understand were talking about fluval, not eheim, but I feel all that extra extra stuff is keen to messing up quicker.

fluval is a trusted brand though... we're not talking about something thats froma fly by night mom and pop company

I wish I spoke German.

Looks really cool. But if you have to use their filter cartridges to have the electronics work,I bet it ends up costing a lot of money to use.And if you modify the filter cartridges, then what is the point in having the electroinics?
