A 50-gallon stock tank, a little pump, fluorescent fixture with grow lights, some water lettuce... voila! Freshwater refugium! The nets are there to catch the crap that came off the water lettuce roots, by the way.

i like the clamp holding the net. i have ratchet straps around my canister filters since the seals are weak thats how i keep it from leaking....ingenuity my friend ingenuity

Yeah, it's supposed to help lower ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. I think the plants like the ammonia best, but I'm not completely sure.

As for the net, you gotta love a good clamp! We're actually going to have to buy another one, because this was the one we used to keep the hose on the tank while we filled them (helped reduce the soggy carpet factor).

that will do a good number on the nitrates

We've already seen nitrates drop from 20 to 5. We added some more water lettuce today.

i think i might have to build one when i make my gar pond

How are the plants holding up?

I have never been able to overwinter/keep Lettuce or Hyacinth looking good indoors. If they are growing, load that stock tank up....GL.

Well, we've had really good luck with the water lettuce. The light is twin-bulb shop light... I'll check out the wattage once I get home. We added some more, and now it's really spreading out and looking great. I was actually going to add an update pic last night, but the light had already gone out for the night. I'll do it this evening, though. I'm surprised at how much success we've had with this... I really didn't know if they would grow or not, but the water lettuce was on sale for a dollar because I guess when it's outside, it would be about time for it to die. Since it's inside, I'm hoping it'll make it through the winter. As for what's in the pond, it's three Pacu and an RTC. Pics of their handsome mugs are in my albums.
