Question about live rock. I am new to SW aquariums and I am planning on grabbing my rock from the ocean rite down the road. A lot of websites and books talk about die off during the shipping process but I was wondering if I would have to cure it if the rock would still be alive. The drive is only about 15 minutes and I would keep it submerged in sw. I'm not sure if there would be any die off at all.

First before you take anything from the ocean you should check to make sure you can and still watch cause you could be breaking local laws or federal laws by doing so.

Spoke to a personal friend of mine ( Bob Fenner ), who spends a lot of time there diving...regarding the local laws for collecting...

I posed the question on what the local laws are....

There are some listings of such by the DLNR there, but I can summarize/ise: Not really possible to extract LR or coral... you can collect some rubble that is supra tidal and hope to reinoculate it... And you can get a "scientific permit" to collect bits/frags of Scleractinians and more... For fishes, limu (algae), and most invert.s ('cept for some that humans consume) one needs a "fishing license/ce" for personal consumption... And a commercial fishing license for gathering more material or re-selling it. More to the point, are your friends going there to gather organisms for themselves for aquarium use? Science? Do have them contact me directly if I may be of further assistance>

Hope this helps.
