After weeks if not months of using a power head and weekly 50% water changes to try and correct gill curl of the soft membrane all to no avail, I decided it was time to cut.
Below are pictures. Firstly I measured how many liters went it to the bag before I started so I would know how much meds to use.
The first pictures are of the gill curl.
I bagged the fish quite easily and poured in the Oceans Free Tranquil.
The destructions said wait 15 min but I wasnt sure if Id put too much in so I just waited about 5 mins after the fish had gone belly up, about 8 minutes in all. I held the fish upright in the bag.
Once on the table I started to cut, my wife was on standby to help and take the pictures.
Just after the last picture of the fish on the table and half way through cutting the first gill plate the fish freaked and did a bit of dancing. Ill be honest I s**t myself and the wife jumped in. I was shaking so much after that the wife had to cut the other side, (Arowana are powerful fish!)
I held it firmly with both hands.
I dont know if the fish wasnt properly out or what but doing this is definably a 2 person job.
Once finished I put the fish in the water which had just been changed beforehand and held it upright for several minutes until it swam out of my hand.
I feel one of the plates was not trimmed enough and still seems a bit curled. This is the plate which is in view in the last pictures.
If this is the case in a month or so my wife and I will do it again. The owner of the aro shop who sold me the meds told me if the plate is curled there is no need to cut it off, he said to make 3 or 4 horizontal cuts from the edge of the plate, about half a centimeter long.
To sum up this was not as bad as I expected and to do it again would be no problem, if it needs to be done, it needs to be done.
