Brothers, if you only build one thing, your entire life..build this.
My old gravel vac was put together with odds-n-ends from other projects, so cost was only the "whole house" fiter unit..$20.

This thing worked like a champ. Could clean everywhere in the tank. Used the return flow to get all the gunk out from behind rockwork and decor. When I was done, I knew the tank was clean..really clean. I put this together in an afternoon..really easy and cheap.
But always thought it could be a more compact, easier to put together system.

Sorry, no camera so the above will have to do.
The new, improved vac is based on an Intex, model 603, 530gph above ground pool filter. This thing goes for $40-45 delivered, off of ebay.
The only mod I did was add PVC garden hose fittings to the intake/output. Some fitting was needed and epoxy was used for leak free connections.
This filter unit makes for the compact, pump/filter combined, system base I was looking for.
This is so simple, anyone..yes, anyone, can put it together in an hour.
For the cost of a Python you can clean your tank without having to keep an eye on water level. You can get all that debris/poop that gets into and behind your decor. You could run this all day, if that is what it took to get all your debris out.
Heck, you might be able to grab one of these at a garage sale, for like $5..
Don`t even think about it..just do it..you will be very glad you put one of these together.

Nice. Let's see those reworked pics!

I guess I'll have to wait until he borrows a camera.:(

The FX5 has a gravel vac capability as well...

How many microns are we talking of waste removal ? This would be great for my Oscar tank

How many microns are we talking of waste removal
Great question..not so great an answer..don`t know.
Pleated fiber used for the cartridge appears the same as the material used for the whole house filter, and that was 20 microns.
I am sure it won`t let pleco flop, oscar bombs, assorted long or short stringies, nor cichlid induced food fog pass. =;-]
