This sucks. I know, I know, man up it's just a fish. But it was one of my favorites and my 6 year old son LOVES this guy, talks to him every day. I don't have the heart to even tell him, he's gunna be heartbroken. 
The mechanical prefilter on my powerhead was bumped off by something.
I found the BGK stuck in inlet of the powerhead face first. All last night he just wandered the tank bumping into things like it could not navigate at all, swimming very irradically. I came home from work tonight and found him dead. The top portion of the face was beat in pretty bad.
Secure prefilters well people! I thought mine was but apparently I was wrong.
On a positive note I guess I finally got an accurate measurement. 11.5" is pretty respectable IMO.
