  • Go for it! - if you get the fish out and into the US, it's good for the hobby to have new fish

Someone posted pictures of their "F0 Jack Dempsey"... which (logically) led to a discussion of the source, collection location and collector of the fish. While the poster was able to identify from whom he bought the fish and the collection location he was given, he was not able to identify who actually collected in this part of Mexico.

Another thread describes someone taking a trip to collect beani in Mexico, catching about 80 fish... and not being able to bring the fish back (something about not being able to pay a big enough bribe to Mexican officials). He had been able to take back other cichlids on previous trips.

As I understand, Mexico has established an onerous (or impossible) permitting process for people who are not associated with an academic institution / doing research to remove fish from their country. It appears that people are removing fish without permits.

While this benefits the hobby in some ways (introduces or re-introduces rare and exciting fish), it also may or may not violate Mexican and US laws. People are clearly getting away with it and Mexico does not appear to have allocated enough resources to address it.

What are members' attitudes regarding un-permitted collection from Mexico and other Central American countries?

I hear the mexican prison hotels are particularly lovely this time of year !!!!!

i think options 1 and 2 are the same thing, no? anywho, i think mexico has bigger problems to worry about. people catching fish from their rivers and exporting them should be the least of their concerns

Option 1 is for those who encourage it to be done without a permit...

Option 2 is for those who probably suspect that it's being done without a permit...but don't want to really know.

Kinda close but trying to differentiate the two perspectives...

Anytime illegal collecting gets out of hand, there tends to be over drastic measures taken ... like Brazil's. I don't think anyone wants to see more countries shut down their aquarium fish trade completely (French Guiana) or partially to just a few governemnt approved collectors (Brazil).

and to elaborate, i dont care. ill buy whatever fish, with or without permits. im not gonna lose any sleep over it. the countries arent doing this because they care about their wildlife, they do it because of one simple thing, MONEY.

fees/permits = money. they just trying to get a piece of the aquarium hobby pie

I dont like the idea. Not sure Id pass on a fish that was legal to own that I wanted though.

:iagree:

...and Id suspect most everyone else would too (unless theyre your typical "do as I say, not as I do" type).

Ive never seen a single post about anyone asking to see permits from sellers before they buy fish and, as far as I can tell, there isnt a single retailer on here posting their "credentials" or the vendors they buy from's credentials either. Not to say some sellers here dont have them, but it doesnt appear to be a big issue with most.
