i got this geo today the store said it was g.surinamensis but i don't know how to id geos. can anyone help me??

Looks a bit too young for my unexperienced eye to see.

Heck, i think that looks more like a S. Juripari
 
It's not a surinamensis, you can blame the exporters/importers for that.

Most likely G. brachybranchus, too small to tell though. Could be altifrons/abalios or a few other species.

Should have researched prior to purchase. Best kept in shoals of at least 4+ of their own species and should be kept on a sand substrate, not hyper-colour blue gravel that it can't sift (how they ideally feed).
 
yea i was just reading about how lots of geos need to be in groups and need to have sand

Actually, before you do that, how big is that tank? Looks -incredibly- small in the photos. These fish can reach upwards of 10" SL for healthy males, so they need at least a big 4', preferably 5'.
