If that impresses you, buy a box full of PENCILS.

I do not understand the practice either, it does not make for an attractive display.

ok.. this may goes to several reasons.. below will list some of the possibilities.

reason1: people have limited tanks, so they are restricted to only a few tanks. In addition, some people here including me are seriously crazy over bichirs (which includes King, Kohaku, FishNCash and many others), therefore we are restricted to only having a few tnks to keep our bichirs at home.

To put it simple, "space restriction" are the 2 words to describe.

reason2: People like to see bichirs piled up together. Some who do not really understand bichirs will say that's silly. However, do u all know why bichirs pile up together? To answer this, It is to allow sense of security.

The keyword is "sense of security".

reason3: People likes to see variety of bichirs swimming together in one tank, as for me, i prefer with some sand and drift wood. However, it's harder to maintain.

However, there must also be a limit of having lots of bichirs in a particular tank as they are heavy bioload. To make it short, "Variety of bichirs" is the main objective.

Ok not 100 but in a large group. They just bite each other in the tail and causing them to shoot up into tank covers or smash into walls.

As for me i do not have such problems with bichirs. The only thing i observed in them is when during feeding time, they will accidentally bite one another's mouth, but they will release it quickly, so there isn't any serious case for this.

Causing them to shoot up into tank covers or smash onto walls? Yes, sometimes it happens, DUE TO sudden change in environment. For example, if i turn on my tank light, my bichirs will all swim about in anxiety.

What's most important to care for bichirs is to just feed them, cover your tank and lastly and most important info, take good care of the water conditions.

u would say they are pencils because you do not understand them and does not know how to appreciate them. They are ancient primitive fishes which lives till now, that has the look of dinosaurs, which inspires me to keep them. Too me, they are really cool.

I think no one's a dope over here as this thread is meant for discussion and therefore, i think that its for everyone to learn. I started off as a newbie too and asked silly questions, and no one rejected answering all my queries. To date, i know a little bit more about bichirs and am still learning from all the experienced people.

I agree.

Bichirs will get more aggressive with each other if their are few of them in a tank, not just bichirs but this goes with every territorial fish. You will likely see them bite each other or nip each other and worst try to eat the other smaller one in a few crowd. Doesn't matter if they are well feed. The more bichirs in there the less biting, figthing and eating each other. Just make sure that everyone get their share of food or they end up skinny. Regular water change and a good filer is a must.

One more thing we like to hit the 100+ mark not because to show off but to like to collect every species known, every regional variant available, every gene mutation that's been breed from different head shape, fins and unique patterns that we see.

I really agree with you scorponok. I dont like it either, i dont see why people do it.
King EL is a great exsample in this, tank is very overstocked, even if you have a huge 375g tank and lots of filteration it doesnt mean you are supposed to fill the tank up to the waterlevel of fishes. Dont get me wrong El, i really admire you as a fishkeeper and a polypterus collector, and i love all your fish, but i really dont like the display.
