Hey everyone, wanted to start a new thread about how fishing is in Florida these days. Are the exotics starting to resurface-especially the peacock bass? All you local guys are welcome to chime in and share your catches!!!
Thanks guys, looking foward to hearing your stories! :D

Side Note: Please don't derail this thread and respond with: Exotics shouldn't be released etc. We all know that its wrong, and there will always be knuckleheads who wrongfully let their pets go. Thank you.

Fishing hasn't changed for me. We don't have exotics as it gets that cold every year up here. Last I heard from the south was that the invasives were pretty scarce.

My friend tore up the red fish with some over 40 pounds, they caught fish after fish. The reds were working bait fish up to the surface and you could see 1000+ red fish all 30 pounds and up.

Its picking up as far as mayans and Talipia but have not seen a single jag in places I would catch them left and right.

Oscars are around as are PB but from what I see drastic reduction in numbers ESP Oscars .Midas I have not seen one.

So they are still here but other than Mayans and Talipia the others are a fraction of what they used to be.

My brother in law lives in one of those communities built around a lake and he has seen them a lot in last couple weeks .This summer will be better in some places than others but they will not be as easily found in most canals like the good old days. It will take years.

The main Canal by me I have seen a couple which is nothing compared to last yr as by this time I would have seen the 20 count plus pre-spawning bunch start to show up.

When did you see them? There used to be many around here (none ever bit) now none after cold spell.

If you plan on keeping any mid summer to fall is best time because all the fry are hugging the canal, etc sides and easy to scoop up with a net .
Imagine you rather start with a small midas over the jumbo adults.

I netted a few last summer because a friend was looking for a yellow/red color combo and found one for him .
However catching an adult on hook I have never been able to do.

good to hear that its starting to pick up again!

louie-so its a drastic reduction huh...do you see and peacock bass starting to spawn by you?

Never seen any. The populations down south dont really have a way to get here without human assistance and they wouldnt survive a winter. There might be a few random ones, I know some have made it as far north as Orlando. I'm at the very northern edge of Fl so its a long way to Miami and the everglades and all the fun stuff down there.

what do you mean next time you catch one? You should be keeping every invasive you catch.
