For the last 3-4 weeks my 7-8" Jack Dempsey will not eat. During feedings he will shutter his head, sometimes violently. He did this before 8-10 months ago but that only lasted 2-3 weeks. He shows no outward signs of disease. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

what does his poo look like? and could you possibly get a video or something? also what size is the tank and what are your water parameters?

That is not a good sign. Anytime a JD won't eat there is something wrong. They are generally hungry little buggers.

I am thinking the same thing as Sarah check his poo to see if it is white and stringy, he might have parasites.

My Male Jd did this as well. The violent head shakes and wont eat anything. It really does appear to be something with digestion. These spells would last 3 or 4 days then he would eat and be normal again. It almost as if the sight of food made him shutter. I added another HOB filter about a month ago and he hasnt done it since. He has also got some garlic, and some metro from trying to cure my Gt. Maybee it has something to do with breeding. At the beginning of this vid female cyano is doing headshakes to impress Jd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSnLgAaTijM
Id like to know why this happens too. Might be a breeding habit.

There is no poo as he/she hasn't eaten in 4 weeks. He was in a 180 gallon when this started and my jaguar started to pick on him so I moved him to my 75 gallon grow out tank. There is very small fish in this tank but my Dempsey has never been aggressive or had any inclination to eat live food so I'm not worried about them becoming food....especially when he is not eating.

Today I noticed him going after a cucumber i had put in the tank. He still wont touch anything else.

i wish i could find a male like yours :/ happen to have any pics when he was younger?

I think there might be some parasites on his gills. Would a saltwater dip be a recommended option? If so, how much salt for a 5 gallon ?
