Here's a trial run of the planted tank i'm setting up. i'm using a sump and co2 injection, so i need to minimize all water splashing and gurgling to avoid gassing off my co2 and wasting a lot of money. used a DIY durso standpipe and a garden valve on the drain line. the drain line was closed to match the pump's output. the result is a super silent setup. no water splashing at all!!!!!! the only noise your hear is from my noisey Quiet One pump :wall: by the way thats 1,017gph of flow youre seeing :)

damn fine work sounds like your pump is churning air or vibrating against something causing that noise.

So what happens when the overflow slows down from buildup? Just playing Devil's Advocate here.

same thing that would happen on any other tank with overflows, unless you have a 'safety' drain line built in. i would have put in a bulkhead but its a glass tank so i dont want to drill

speaking of which, i have been thinking about putting a fail-safe drain in there. could i just leave a piece of pvc pipe hanging in there, over the lip of the tank and hanging right at the surface? then if the water levels begins to rise, it will drain down to the sump. would the water drain that way?

No. There would be no way to start a siphon. They tank would overflow before water would start running. You could try something like I made. They don't flow a whole lot as the diameter is small, but it could help with slowdowns in the plumbing.

This is the best picture I have of it so far.

yeah thats what i figured. ok, so what am i looking at here? lol! how does it work, and how does the siphon start? where do you have it draining to?

Not sure how what Pharaoh showed works, but i have seen what i think was a durso with the air line coming out and ran to the lip of the tank. When the water line got high enough the air line was under water and stopped venting turning it into a full siphen which would draw a lot more water bringint the water level down. Might be noisy but it it's a back because something is not working right it shouldn't be a problem.

not sure how that would work. but were talking about a situation in which the overflow pipe would clog, or something get caught in the valve that i closed down. you would need an additional drain line. you cant use the same overflow because this would have been clogged up somewhere, hypthetically

Nice and quiet! And as for the pump noise, my quiet one pumps are by far the quietest pumps I've ever used. I've got a mag 18 right now that sounds like I'm running a weed-eater under the water compared to my quiet ones.

I would suggest slipping a rubber, plastic, or foam (hard cell) between the bottom of the pump and the glass bottom of the sump. The only noise I ever get from mine is from slight vibration against the bottom.

As far as any problems in case of overflow clogging, have you ever had an overflow clog? I haven't... I think the only truly fail-safe backup would be to drill the tank, inside of the overflow box, at a height where it won't drain if the standpipe is running, but if the standpipe gets clogged it automatically starts to drain down the backup.

But you said you don't want to drill...
