Ha all, have a pair of mono p/bass that have had several batches of eggs, but to date none have been fertilised, both male & female would be at least 3 years old & approx 35cm female & 40cm male. Appears to do everything right, male swims over eggs after female has laid but nothing.
Male appears to go ape after the first day & chases the female away from the spawn & then the eggs start flying everywhere. After 3 days there is not an egg to be seen, they are scattered all throught the gravel.

What to do???

thanks,
Volkslid

Further to my thread, they layed again over the weekend but this time the male was not as aggressive to the female, I managed to syphon out some eggs & put into a tumbler in a seperate tank.
The eggs in the tumbler looked to be going well as did some of the eggs that I left in the tank. After 3 days you could see some of the eggs contained wrigglers. This morning I got up to find fungus starting to take hold of some of the eggs in the tumbler,so I tried to syphon out the dead & mouldy eggs,at closer inspection I found that the eggs that contained the wrigglers also appeared to die so have lost all those eggs & the ones in the main tank have also stopped moving or have now lost adhesion & are now floating around the tank.
I maintained the tank temp at around 85-86 & added meth blue when first putting the eggs in & then a follow up on the 3rd day.

What am I doing wrong ?????????????

To prevent fungus from growing on eggs, remove them and place them in quarantine, and treat with a 3ppm concentration (about one teaspoon per 10 gallons) of Methylene Blue. I don't know what dosage you used, but this has always worked for me on discus eggs. I never tumbled them though, maybe that harmed them. I don't know. Good luck.

To my suprise went away for the weekend & came back to find approx 20 fry swimming around in the small tank.
I have the survival surprise happen all the time, but with common fish. Tumbling fry would probably help drown/kill them. I'm not up on tumbling eggs either but 20 fry can be called a raging success on your part.

Have you heard of spawning by PBass with anyone else? Also, fish need to go through two or three attempts before they "get it" and get the idea.
